Martin Johnson CBE
England Rugby World Cup winning captain

I'd been approached by David English on a few occasions to see if I'd be interested in playing for the Bunbury's Pro-celebrity Cricket Team and after a few false dawns, my moment finally arrived on a sunny day in August last year. The Bunbury's were due to play against the Ashwell Crusaders XI at the historic ‘Parkers Piece’ green in Cambridge and yours truly had unearthed the old white slacks and steel toe capped cricket boots and was mentally preparing to pit his wits against some of the legends of English cricket.

The day started like most events with a meet and greet, lunch and drinks - the usual sporting pleasantries. This at least gave me the chance to meet some of my team-mates and to get some valuable tips before I entered the world of cricket. Which end to hold the bat, the usual stuff.

I really did enjoy the match as there’s nothing better than a good old game of cricket on a Sunday afternoon. Undoubtedly the highlight of the day for me was having Graham Gooch caught off a cunningly disguised snorting, lifting 'in ducker'. Despite the sheer brilliance of the ball, he somehow managed to smash it back over my head only to be caught brilliantly on the boundary by an athletic diving colleague. I can’t remember who actually took the catch, which is a crying shame given the quality of the effort but I think it’s more important here to remember who was bowling!

The Bunbury’s won the match, it was a great day for everyone and for the benefiting charity – the Sargeant Children’s Cancer Care, and I look forward to this summer when my celebrity Rugby XI take on the legendary Bunbury’s XI at Rugby School in Warwickshire on the 14th July. It should be a great day.

Have a fantastic 21st season!
