The Bunbury Interview with...

Ollie Rayner

Ollie Rayner
Sussex County Cricket Club

When did you make your Bunbury debut, and how did you get on?
I made my Bunbury debut at Ardingly College this season on a very wet day and made a scratchy 68 with a fairly fragile head!

What is your most treasured cricket possession?
My box and my miniature ping pong set that travels around with me in my cricket bag for rainy days... so based on the British summer, I'm quite good!

What song do you come out to bat to in Twenty20 and why?
Invisible Man by Queen (I don't often feature!)

Where were you at the exact moment we regained the Ashes in 2005?
At my local cricket club, the Saffrons in Eastbourne (I suspect a few under par by then!)

Who has the best moustache in cricket?
Big Merv Hughes!

How many Test match grounds around the world have you been to?
All English test grounds and Newlands, Cape Town, Dubai, Abu Dhuabi Stadium, Mumbai and Banglaore.

What five morsels would make it onto the table of your fantasy cricket tea?
Luisiana Love bite (Lords), biltong, Cadburys Giant Buttons, scotch eggs and Percy Pigs (Marks and Spencers)

What's your cricketing ambition?
To play for England, Lashings and the Bunburys.

What's your earliest cricketing memory?
'One hand, one bounce' when the tide went out on the beach with my dad.

Describe David English in 3 words.
Larger than life!

What is your favourite Bunbury moment?
The Ashes urn keeping wicket!

Who in Sussex's changing room has the smelliest feet?
Murray Goodwin, (very hollow legs though!)

Where is your favourite cricket ground?
Lords; great lunches, amazing place to play with lots of history.

Where is the best beach you've ever played cricket on?
Not very inspiring but Eastbourne beach, many epic battles between the rock pools!

If you had to send one man out to bat an innings to save your life, who would you choose and why?
Ravi Bopara, three hundreds in three games is good enough for me.

Boxer shorts, briefs or commando?
Commando - now I am living on my own I have to do all my own washing!!

David Boon infamously drank 52 cans of VB on an Ashes flight to England. How far to excess have you ever gone on the Sussex bus?
Well, we have a no drinking culture down at Sussex, but occasionally we are let out on the loose. 52 in 24 hours sounds pretty impressive, I reckon I'm about 51 shy of that!

What does it mean to you to play for the Bunbury's?
Playing cricket at beautiful venues for a good cause, full of celebrities says it all I think.
