A founder member of the EC and Bunbury Elevens, Eric is without
doubt the worlds premier Rock and Blues Guitarist. He is also the
only man to have bowled four wides underarm to Graham Hick on the
Worcester County Cricket Ground.
As a guitarist, singer and songwriter, Eric has always experimented
with new ideas and fashions. The same applies in his passion for
sport, for years he followed football with West Bromwich Albion.
He then succeeded in horse racing as an owner and a punter before
becoming fascinated with cricket. He used to watch the game with
his great pal, Sid Perrin, in Ripley, Surrey. He was intrigued by
the timing and atmosphere of the sport. Cricket offered the serenity
he had only experienced by his love of fishing.
In 1984 he asked me if we could go to Lords and watch England play
“Come and meet Beefy” I said, we arrived at the pavilion
door but couldn’t enter as E.C. wasn’t wearing a tie.
I phoned Ian in the dressing room. “No problem, son,”
said the Big Man. In a few minutes he appeared at the door, gave
Eric his tie and from that day their friendship and mutual love
for cricket and Worcestershire was forged.
In 1990, Eric took over Phil Collins title of “Workaholic
of the Year” by touring all four corners of the globe with
only a few weeks break. Early 1991, saw E.C. complete a record 24
nights at the Albert Hall. 1992 and 1993 the same, and in 1994 he
passed the century mark.
Last year the Bunburys played a game at Ripley to raise funds for
Eric’s Crossroads Clinic in Antigua (Ripley CC July 9th 2000).
It was great to see Eric backing the team. ‘EL’, Congratulations
on your marriage to Melia McEnery and the birth of your little daughters
Julie Rose and Ella Mae.
